You are giving up the good stuff

You are giving in the good stuff;
in pursuit of something better.

Sell your clothes
and spend the money on books.
Yes, you have that library card,
but you can’t dog-ear their paperbacks.

Swap the whisky for the lager,
The meat for the pulses,
Remove the sugar from your tea
and search for sweetness elsewhere.

Write and read
and then write some more.
Hope to someday say something
that makes all the frugal now worthwhile.

Flog your furniture,
Books will do as a makeshift nightstand,
Which sits besides your bed,
on a long, bare, wooden floor.

Release the love, and cleanse the hate,
As though you are freeing up your mind,
From the storage that it takes,
Making room for the other,

Sacrifice precious sleep.
a 7pm americano is a choice,
But you’ll stretch the night out long
like pastry on the worktop.

You just need more time.
So you rest at 3 and rise at 6,
to be back staring at the sunrise,
ready for it all to start again.

What is the use in dreaming,
When you have to wake up?
Let sleep become the bore,
because you are living your dreams.

You are giving up the good stuff,
in pursuit of something better.
